Toronto. – BlackBerry Ltd dismissed about 250 employees at its headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, as part of new measures to reduce costs, reported Thursday smartphone maker.
“This is part of the next stage of our recovery plan increase efficiency and boost our company “, said a spokeswoman for BlackBerry.
The company, which last year eliminated thousands of jobs recently suggested that it might could be further cuts.
Last month, BlackBerry reported weak results for its fiscal first quarter, which led to a collapse of 28% in its share price.
sales of its new line of smartphones have been lower than those provided by experts.
The results showed little evidence that the company can recover in the short term the market share held by Apple iPhone phones Galaxy Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and other devices that use the Android operating system Google Inc.
BlackBerry, which at March 2 had nearly 12,700 full-time workers, said employees were dismissed from the test drive of the new product.
The company recently said he no longer thought to migrate its new BlackBerry 10 operating system to its Playbook tablet, because the hardware was not powerful enough to deliver an optimal experience to users.
Many take that as a sign that the manufacturer plans to remove the device. In the last quarter, only 100,000 Playbooks were sold, compared with 14.6 million iPads sold by Apple in the same period.
