BlackBerry consider spinning off its BBM messaging service - Yahoo! Finance

TORONTO, 28 (Reuters / EP)

The company is considering spinning off its BlackBerry messaging service in a separate unit, as has collected the newspaper The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. The subsidiary would be called BBM, the newspaper said.

The firm has been moving BBM team executives and working on other offerings beyond messaging, including some tools already available for BlackBerry users, such as video call, said the newspaper.

The company is also considering that BBM is available for computers, the newspaper noted, citing a person unfamiliar with the topic.

BlackBerry

spokesman said the company could not comment on rumors or speculation. The company said earlier this month it was evaluating options that could include an outright sale. BlackBerry shares fell nearly 2 percent to $ 10.72 Canadian (7.63 euros) on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
