Lt. Col. Damien Pickart, a Pentagon spokesman, said the department authorized the use smartphones BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook tablet using its Enterprise Service System 10, and Knox the Samsung Android.

“This is a significant step towards the establishment of a multi-vendor environment to support a variety of devices and operating systems of latest technology,” Pickart said in a statement.

“We are pleased to add to Blackberry 10 and Knox Samsung version of Android to our family of mobile devices to support the Department of Defense,” he said.

“We look forward to additional providers also participate in this process,” he added.
